GT Bunnings & sons have always been associated with high quality and reliability with both the component parts of their machines and the protective paint finish.

PPG were able to understand our unique requirements and tailor a specification to give us the coating system solution to offer the high performance and quality expected whilst optimising our manufacturing procedures for application.
This unique heritage and expertise enabled GT Bunning & sons to work closely with PPG to implement a 2 component re-coatable system from the high performance SigmaCover and SigmaDur ranges. This system not only offers excellent corrosion protection but also excellent long term gloss and colour retention providing extended cosmetic performance whilst offering improved cleaning properties.
Extensive field trials were carried out with the system at the implementation stage and the results spoke for themselves. GT Bunning and sons are now in the 11th year of using this protective system for all machines and believe that the quality of the products and technical and commercial support given by PPG Protective & Marine Coatings is unrivalled by any other supplier in the protective coatings industry.
Meet the Onkens
Based in Carroll, Iowa, Onken Feedlots bought their first Bunning 350 tri-axle Widebody spreader in 2009; they now own four, a testament in itself. When I asked Joel Onken, why they had bought a Bunning spreader he said “We needed a machine that could spread all year round and cope with temperatures ranging from -104F to +104F. The Bunning is more than up to the task”. He went on to say that the machine had exceeded their expectations for durability, reliability and spread pattern adding, “It spreads very evenly and consistently with an average spread width of 60 feet from the vertical beater machine and up to 150 feet with the horizontal beater machine. The horizontal beater machine is great when dealing with hotter products like chicken manure”. Joel explained that the company had first bought a Bunning machine due to it being stronger than anything else they had seen and that this remained the case.
Reflecting on the way that the relationship between Onken and G.T. Bunning had grown over the years and the positive effect this had had on his business, Joel stated “Our business has grown because of the service we offer and because of the spreaders. Whenever we do customer work we receive really great feedback. Because we were so impressed with Bunning spreaders we asked them if we could also sell their machines. They agreed and this has become a very successful part of the Onken business”.
The Bunning machines are manufactured in North America as well as at the company’s main manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom. The set-up also includes a distribution company named ALPHA EQUIPMENT which is based in Craven, Saskatchewan, Canada. This trans-Atlantic set up has clear advantages for the Iowa based company who went on to say, “Having machines manufactured in North America as well as the UK is great, it gives us confidence in the parts support and back up”.
G.T. Bunning and Sons Ltd. was founded in 1906 and has always manufactured for the agricultural market. It first built spreaders in 1986, so has a good track record in this field. “Build them strong and keep them simple” is still the company’s philosophy to this day.

New Industry leading coating technology installed.
G T Bunning & Sons Ltd continues to place emphasis on improving processes, with a view to consistently increasing efficiencies, enhancing quality and thereby achieving better performance benchmarks in all areas.
As part of this programme, the coating facility at G. T. Bunning & Sons Ltd in Norfolk, England has recently installed new paint equipment.
Two Wiwa Fleximix I, 3K (three component) systems were installed, which supply the coatings to two spray booths. The operators can quickly and efficiently select the two component primer or a range of top coat colours, which are then delivered to electrostatic spray guns, with minimal waste of the coating used. A small dose of “flow” solvent is introduced as a third component to improve the gloss of the coatings.
The accuracy of the coating mix is guaranteed by the superior technology of the Wiwa system, which also enables operators and management to view up to date coating usage on a display incorporated in the electronic panel.
In the paint supply rooms, Wiwa Phoenix 11032 airless pumps supply the coatings via high pressure heaters to the Fleximix systems, with electric agitators and feed pumps assisting the processing from the larger bulk containers.
The equipment automatically calculates and mixes the correct quantity of paint or primer, hardener and thinners eliminating the chances of human error.
Both operator and maintenance teams have seen a benefit and we also have the commercial advantage of a three-colour option that can be implemented within minutes.
The current climate dictates that cost savings along with time efficiencies are even more important, and this installation has already delivered above expectation.
Environmental impact is also of great importance and this system has certainly helped reduce waste paint and thinners.
We purchased the Wiwa equipment from Airblast Eurospray Ltd. after extensive trials were carried out at our premises; we evaluated both the Wiwa range and other well-known systems. I believe we have made the right choice”.
New Agent appointment in South Africa
Greg Shepherd, Joint Managing Director of GT Bunning & Sons Ltd, recently visited South Africa to finalise the appointment of new Bunning agents Northmec. During his stay Greg travelled with Northmec’s Malmesbury Branch Manager Eugene Brits and Sales Representatives Anton Stander, together they visited some existing Bunning customers and prospective new ones.
Vlok Blanckenberg, Klipheuwel.
In Klipheuwel near Cape Town they caught up with Vlok Blanckenberg who has been running a Bunning spreader for 9 years. He recently up-dated his Lowlander 150 Mk4 for a larger Lowlander Widebody 180. “Bunning is the best machine in the world, the quality is great” said Mr Blanckenberg. Around 850 cows are milked on the farm 3 times per day. Mr Blanckenberg estimates that 48,000 tonnes of sand and straw based manure are spread every year on cropping land prior to planting Maize and Wheat.

RW Starke, Darling, Western Cape
Chris and Robert Starke milk 1650 cows and have 3500 cattle in total. They run 2 Bunning Lowlander Mk4 150’s and are very pleased with the appointment of Northmec as the new Bunning agent. Commenting on the spreaders, Robert Starke said “If only everyone built machines like Bunning” he went on to say that they have had no breakdowns and only had to put on new auger points and shorten the chains.

Phil Stoffberg, Koeberg, Western Cape.
Mr Stoffberg has been running a Lowlander Widebody 180 and a Lowlander 150 Mk4 for 6 years spreading Bio Solids for Enviroserve in the Capetown region. “Millions of tonnes have gone through the machine in that time and they haven’t missed a beat, Bunning is simply the best equipment I have ever had” said Mr Stoffberg. He has recently taken delivery of 2 new Bunning Lowlander Widebody 180 spreaders fitted with optional 710/70 R38 High Load tyres, flared extension sides and sprung drawbars.

New 6 meter press
Investment in new equipment continues at the GT Bunning factory. This new 6 meter wide press costing approximately £ 170,000.00 and weighing 33 tonnes was installed early in January 2014. It can appy 320 tonnes of load to material up to 8mm thick and 6 meters in length. Incorporating laser angle correction and being fully computer controlled will ensure cosistent componet production in less time than the previous model. The special throat depth of 850mm will ensure that all extra wide flared sides will continue to be offered on the Lowlander range of spreaders.
